Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has ordered the police to register an FIR against Asansol mayor Jitendra Tiwari in connection with the alleged attack on a BJP candidate during the recent panchayat elections.

Justice Protik Prakash Banerjee also directed the police to submit a status report about its probe within June 19.

Mr Tiwari however accused Union minister and BJP MP of Asansol Babul Supriyo of political vendetta against him for fear of losing in next Lok Sabha elections. Mr Supriyo slammed his prediction. On April 7 morning BJP candidate Dalapti Ghorui was going to submit his nomination for a panchayat seat at the sub division office.

He was accompanied by Lakshman Ghorui, BJP district president of Burdwan West and his aides.

A group of Trinamul Congress workers allegedly attacked them. The BJP candidate received injuries in hand as he was slashed by the attackers with sharp weapons.

According to the BJP, Mr Tiwari who is the mayor of the Trinamul ruled Asansol Municipal Corporation was present at the spot and he was captured in a video.

Later the BJP went to lodge a complaint at the Durgapur police station about the attack against Mr Tiwari and other ruling party workers. But the complaint was not taken.

The BJP moved the high court alleging that the complaint was not accepted even after the video of the attack in which Mr Tiwari was seen was shown to the police.

On Wednesday Justice Banerjee gave his ruling after hearing. Mr Tiwari, however alleged, “Assuming his defeat in the Lok Sabha Elections next year Mr Supriyo called the shots from behind everything including moving the high court. He knows he would have to give an

explanation of his defeat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. That is why he is doing all these to save his back.”

He claimed, “He is only trying to project as if he could not do anything due to our resistance. But the panchayat elections results proved that he has no acceptance in Asansol. The truth will come out if the police investigates the case.”

Countering him Mr Supriyo said, “The Trinamool leaders are now busy in making predictions.” He added, “According to them, chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be the next PM. They should quit politics if they can foresee the future. The Asansol Mayor will soon taste the reality. The people of Asansol know who has done what for them.”
