Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will be putting up 25 hoardings pertaining to the international recognition received by chief minister Mamata Banerjee's pet project Kanyashree in each of its 144 wards.

The councillors have been instructed to take the responsibility of placing these hoardings in each of their wards. The move is expected to spread the message of the UN win of the scheme in The Hague, Netherlands.

"We have given a CD to all councillors with pictures of Kanyashree and the award ceremony at The Hague in Netherlands, where the chief minister received the prize. They have been asked to take print outs of pictures and place hoardings accordingly," a senior official in the office of the municipal commissioner said.

Abhijeet Mukherjee, member mayor in council (education) said that the civic body wants to bring more girls under the Kanyashree scheme, particularly in the wake of its global recognition. "We will organise campaigns to make the people aware of the importance of girls’ education," he said.

The Opposition councillors however criticised the move of the civic body. Left councillor Chayan Mukherjee said that none of their party councillors would place Kanyashree hoardings in their wards. "It is not clear whether the councillors will install the hoardings at their own cost or there will be a separate fund by the KMC for this.

This scheme actually started during the Left rule. But the CM has not recognised that," he said.
