Markets shut as mark of respect for ex-PM

It is for the first time that traders have observed a Bharat Bandh suo-moto on demise of any leader.

New Delhi: Traders across the national capital on Friday observed a day-long trade bandh to pay their respects and homage to departed former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

The bandh was observed on the appeal of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).

More than 8 lakh traders in Delhi and about 6 crore traders all over the country kept their business establishments closed and no business activity took place throughout the day. Large number of traders from Delhi and neighbouring states attended the last rites of former PM Vajpayee.

Prayer meeting were held in different cities of states all over the country and traders paid their homage.

CAIT national president B.C. Bhartia & secretary general Praveen Khandelwal claimed that beside Delhi, traders of other states also kept their commercial establishments closed. It is for the first time that traders have observed a Bharat Bandh suo-moto on demise of any leader.

In Delhi, all major wholesale and retail markets including Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, Sadar Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Khari Baoli, Bhairath Place, Lajpat Rai Market, Kashmiri Gate, Nai Sarak, Kamla Nagar, Ashok Vihar, Rohini, Rajouri Garden, Uttam Nagar, Tilak Nagar, Janakpuri, Kirti Nagar, South Extension, Greater Kailash, Green Park, Khan Market, Kalkaji, Nehru Place, Preet Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Shahdara, Mayur Vihar, Darya Ganj were closed and markets wore a deserted look.
