New Delhi: A Delhi police sub-inspector is in dock after he was caught accepting bribe from the mother of a man who was arrested in April in a robbery case. The accused inspector, who has been booked, was the investigating officer in the said case.

It is alleged that the accused, Bishamber Dayal, had accepted Rs 20,000 in exchange for “tampering with the facts” in the case. The act, where he is seen keeping a bundle of currency notes in his pocket, was filmed and submitted to the vigilance wing of the Delhi police. After an initial inquiry, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, was registered at the vigilance police station against him on Monday.

While giving the history of the case, the complainant told the police that the robbery case was registered on March 29 when 30-year-old mechanic Nagendra approached the police complaining that he was robbed of Rs 15,000 by three men whom he identified as Bunty, Shahrukh, and Shibu.

Over a fortnight later, on April 18, Shibu was arrested. According to his mother Qamar Jahan, in due course of investigation Dayal approached her several times and said that if she wanted him to go easy on her son, she needed to pay him Rs 1 lakh.

She often pleaded with him that she was poor and did not have that kind of money but he remained adamant that the money be paid. Finally, Ms Jahan told him that she could arrange a part of the money he had been demanding. It was mutually agreed upon that on April 26 the money would be handed over.

On the pre-arranged day, Ms Jahan took her neighbour Noori and Noori’s daughter Shabana with her to Khajuri Khas police station where Dayal allegedly asked them to wait outside. Later he came out and sat on one of the chairs and Ms Jahan handed him over Rs 20,000, she claimed. He then kept the money in his left pocket without counting, unaware of the fact that Shabana had recorded the act on her mobile camera phone.
