New Delhi: A Jain guru, who was allegedly kidnapped from the city, was recovered in Ludhiana on Saturday morning. A team of Delhi police, which was already on its way to Ludhiana, received information from the Ludhiana police about the safe recovery of the Jain guru. A case of kidnapping had been registered at Roop Nagar police station on Thursday.

Jain guru Gani Rajendra Vijay was recovered from near Sahnewal airport in Ludhiana on Saturday morning. It is alleged that the kidnappers thrashed him and dumped him on the roadside in Sahnewal in the wee hours, said a senior police official.

During initial investigation the Jain guru said that when he gained conscious, he found himself on the roadside. He immediately borrowed a mobile phone from a passerby and informed the police and his devotees about his location and status. Within few minutes, the Ludhiana police reached the spot and took him to a local hospital for medical assistance.

He said that when he was on his way to the ashram in Roop Nagar, he was stopped by an acquaintance on the pretext of discussing an issue. However, someone injected him with sedative and kidnapped him. He could only remember that he was taken away in a car and when he woke up, he found himself at the roadside.

Ludhiana police said that the Jain guru had no visible injury marks. However, he was complaining of pain in the abdomen and shoulder. The Delhi police took him to the civil hospital for medical examination.

“Jain guru is on his way to Delhi and will reach there late night. He is not in any condition to answer questions. Taking swift action in the case, several police teams were formed on Thursday to track the missing person. After locating him in Ludhiana, a police team was sent. However, before Delhi police could reach, he was recovered by the Punjab police,” said Jatin Narwal, DCP (North).
