New Delhi: A Special Protection Group commando, posted at the residence of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, who had gone missing last week, resurfaced on Wednesday.

He is currently being questioned by the police about the sequence of events leading from his disappearance to reappearance. So far, they have ruled out any foul play as the personnel Rakesh Kumar (31) claims that he was under depression due to financial woes. His parents are also being questioned to ascertain if that was the case.

On Wednesday, the SPG control room received a call that a man who was carrying the force’s identity card seemed lost in the area under Tilak Marg police station. A call was made to the police control room and a police team later brought him to the police station and informed his parents.

“He went missing on September 1 and two days later, his family members approached us and submitted a missing complaint. On the basis of that complaint, we launched a probe and were looking for him when the news about him being seen in the New Delhi area reached us,” said deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) B.K. Singh.

Probe has revealed that Kumar who is a resident of Dwarka Sector -8 had recently completed his commando training for VIP security. He told the police that he had been reaching late for work and was pulled up by a senior. This combined with the fact that he was under debt had left him depressed. He had a day off on September 1 but to meet a senior officer he left home in his uniform telling the family that he was going for work.

However, he could not meet the officer concerned and left the phone in the office and since then the family did not hear from him. “He is not saying much, we may provide him some counselling,” said a police officer.
