Jewar incident: Kin say ‘raped’ women tried to kill themselves

Gautam Budh Nagar (UP): In a shocking incident, four women, who were allegedly gangraped on May 25, attempted suicide on Sunday morning blaming the police for delay in solving the case, claimed the family members of Jewar incident.

The family alleged that the women were depressed owing to the slow pace of investigation, which instigated them to take this extreme step. “On Sunday morning, at 10 am, three of them put kerosene on themselves while crying uncontrollably, thinking about the trauma they have gone through in the past few days. They were also suffering as no action has been taken by the law enforcement agencies against the culprits,” said the 32-year-old brother of the deceased, who was shot dead in the incident.

The brother added that the fourth victim did the same around 3 pm at her house. He said that they were all sitting in the porch outside their house when they heard the children crying. They ran to the first floor where they saw the women soaked in kerosene oil, trying to light themselves on fire while the other women were trying to stop them.

“Thankfully, the matchstick didn’t light as it was drenched in oil,” he said, adding that the women were told the police was not going to do anything.

While explaining the reason, the brother said that the women have no other option but to end their life.

“Police claimed to solve the case in two days but it’s been twelve days and nothing has been done. They’re stalling us by saying it’ll happen today or tomorrow. What else do we do?” he said. The brother further added that he tried to explain to the women that suicide is not the solution. The police said that it was informed about the incident and tried to pacify the family. “Police officers were sent to console them. I agree the case hasn’t been solved, but we’re trying our best,” said SSP Love Kumar.

“We asked them to have patience. We are working on a particular gang. It’s taking time, but we’ll be successful soon,” he added.
