If you are touring through Kottayam, you shouldn’t miss the experience the Vembanad Lake offers. Kottayam has a wide network of canals that converge into the Vembanad Lake. This fast-developing backwater tourism destination is an amazing picnic spot for your Onam holiday, a time when families come together. Get in there and go for boating, fishing and sightseeing. Wade through the waters in a houseboat to discover the tiny lanes, expanse and quietude of water. Kumarakom is the perfect place to understand the thrill of boating. You can choose from the houseboat cruises and holiday packages the Kumarakom Tourist Village offers.

Vembanad Lake has special significance during Onam season. The place comes alive during the festive month with the spectacular snake boat races. Oarsmen singing loud and slicing through the waters is a sight to behold.

It is the same lake that inspired poet Ramapurathu Warrier to create the Kuchelavritham Vanchipattu, the upbeat vanchipattu or boat song. The most celebrated work of Warrier, it narrates the tale of Kuchela going to Dwaraka to meet Krishna. Apparently, Warrier composed and recited the poem during the King’s boat journey and he indirectly presented his miseries before the king through his song. The story says Warrier was adequately rewarded.

Plunge into the beauty of the lake to get inspired. The nearest Railway Station from Vembanad is at Kottayam.  Cochin International Airport is 63 kilometres away.
