First interfaith lesbian marriage in UK makes history
Kalavati who is of Hindu descent married Miriam, Jewish, from Texas in a ceremony in Leicester.
Kalavati Mistry and Miriam Jefferson made history by tying the knot in UK’s first interfaith lesbian wedding.
Kalavati who is of Hindu descent along with Miriam who is Jewish exchanged their vows and had a traditional Hindu wedding in Leicester, 20 years after beginning a secret romance.
While the couple struggled to find a Hindu priest willing to perform the ceremony, they finally tied the knot in an Indian restaurant surrounded by friends and family.
Kalavati came out to her family just a few years back. She had met Miriam, from Texas, USA, on a training course and the pair had fallen quickly in love.
The newlyweds will spend the rest of their lives together in Texas.
The Sun reported that Kalavati had said that it was initially very difficult for her as a gay woman.
She went on to add that while marriage was very important to her, it was very difficult to find a priest who would be ready to conduct the wedding even during the changing times.
The brides both wore traditional red and white bridal coloured sarees, fresh garlands and mangal sutras.
