The internet has opened doors to a lot of information to flow across the globe and social media took things to another level with helping people connect easily. But trends which can be described as disturbing or simply bizarre have also created a buzz on the digital space from time to time.

The latest to join the list of mind boggling trends on the internet is the Tide Pod challenge which involves people putting liquid detergent in their mouth. Videos of social media users gagging on colourful detergent packets have been circulating on the internet as they challenge others to do the same.

Authorities have warned that the substance containing ethanol, polymers and hydrogen peroxide is toxic and can do serious damage if consumed. The bizarre challenge originated as a joke in an article on a satirical news site, but some seem to have taken it too seriously.

Meanwhile YouTube has started removing videos that show youngsters chewing detergent packets.
