A new fad is taking the cosmetic world by storm! It seems Korean-based beauty brands like Toly Moly and Missha are creating skincare products with snail secretion as the key ingredient. They are claiming it will treat wrinkles, acne scares and other skin conditions with their range of skincare products.

The fad is similar to one which came out a few years ago saying that Asian snake venim was being billed as the most powerful antidote to wrinkles.

According to study, it is the glycolic acid in snail secretion that has been deemed as the agent necessary for the skin cells to produce collagen and elastin. These are important for getting an even skin tone. The slime is something that the snails secrete to protect themselves when agitated.

But the question remains if it will be a good skincare product.

Dermatologist to the President Estate Clinic and The Skin & Hair Clinics, Dr Deepali Bhardwaj spoke to a leading English Daily, raising concerns over the new trend. She said that while the products claim to contain certain acids, they are too filtered to be actually able to produce any results.

The doctor further added that Greek myths do hint towards using snails and leeches as medicinal ingredients its necessity has waned as medicine has progressed.

There is no doubt that snail secretion is rich in nutrient but whether it is really an effective skincare treatment remains to be seen.

There’s no doubt that snail secretion is rich in nutrient but there’s no guarantee that it will be an effective skincare treatment because a lot depends on how the slime is concentrated, the type of snail and the amount excreted.
