A treatment that’s not as scary as it sounds but promises to be the perfect solution to frizzy hair, and, possibly, baldness.

There’s no dearth of hair treatments in the market. But one of them — hair botox — has recently been garnering a lot of attention.

Contrary to what the name may suggest, there are no injections involved in the treatment. The procedure involves the application of a solution to the hair, much like keratin treatment.

Explaining the procedure, hair care expert Shantanu says, “The hair is first shampooed to open up the cuticles and soften the strands. The treatment solution is then applied and massaged into the hair, from the roots to the tips. It is left on for about 45 minutes or to an hour, after which it is washed off. And the results are seen immediately.”

Vimla Kisen, the owner of a salon in Begumpet, is a big believer in the treatment. She has introduced hair botox to her clients, and they are all satisfied. Talking about how it works, she says, “The solution penetrates the cuticles and fills in the gaps and breaks in the hair. It easily mends tears in the hair follicles, creating sleeker, shinier, and tougher strands. It helps reverse damage and brings hair back to life. The best part is that anyone can have it done for healthier hair. There are no side effects.” She adds that though the treatment has been around for a while, it has only gained visibility in recent times because of the advent of new products. One of Vimla’s many happy clients is her friend Priti Kapoor. Though she was initially skeptical about undergoing the treatment, she decided to take the plunge, and she’s glad she did. “The word ‘botox’ automatically generates the image of a syringe. I thought they would inject something into my scalp.

But then I researched the procedure and I was relaed when I underwent the treatment. One major plus point is that it’s not a chemical procedure, it just ensures that the hair gets the right amount of protein. I am very happy with how my hair has turned out — all lustrous,” she says.

Anjali Kedia loves revolutionary new treatments that produce instant results. When she heard about hair botox, she knew that she had to try it. “I have always been a sport in terms of trying new beauty treatments. When I heard about hair botox, I was going to try it out. Who doesn't want a long, lustrous frizz-free mane?” she says. The effects of the treatment last for about one to four months, depending on the aftercare.

Frizz-free hair is not the only benefit undergoing hair botox. According to a recent study, the procedure could potentially be used to treat baldness as well. “The study has found that hair botox treatment helps increase blood circulation in the scalp, resulting in hair growth. Botox is a muscle relaxant; and when muscles are relaxed, blood flow increases. But this application of the treatment is still in its nascent stage. It will take a few more months of research and experimentation to confirm that it can be used to treat baldness,” says Dr Rajetha Damisetty, the Additional Medical Director of the Oliva chain of advanced hair and skin clinics.
