A colour is not just an expression of mood, but it could be a symbolic reflection of a generation that chooses to break boundaries without breaking rules. It is predicted that the year 2019 and onward will see the rise of Gen Z – a generation that speaks, eats and breathes technology. And, the colour that is dubbed as the next big colour trend in fashion to woo this generation is the Gen Z Yellow – a bright, cheery hue that’s dominating the runways, the wardrobes of our favourite stars and the streets.

Just when you thought millennial pink was fading away and the trend of defining an age group by colour was dying, along comes Gen Z yellow to brighten everything from makeup to housewares and even food.  Fashion stylist  Shirin predicts, “Like the sartorial version of sunshine, this fresh and zesty springtime colour instantly lifts moods and makes you smile. These characteristics of the colour make it a symbolic representation of what Gen Z are looking for. There’s no doubt we could all do with more optimism and cheeriness in our lives. The shade has been a go-to for style-savvy celebrities from Parineeti Chopra to Sara Ali Khan. Designers and brands have incorporated the festive colour wholeheartedly in their collections. Not only is it a hue that suits every skin tone and looks great against Indian tan; but also symbolises festivity which makes it perfect for wedding occasions. If subtlety is not your thing, dive wholeheartedly into the trend wearing a Gen z yellow dress, kurta or lehenga.”

An instant pep me up, the colour represents sunshine, happiness and spring cheer. Thanks to the fashion giants, yellow is coming back on high street and red carpet with full power. Replacing the ruling shade millennial pink, Gen Z Yellow can be described as the ‘Notice Me Yellow’, feels Lucky Yadav, founder of fashion brand. She says, “First spotted in Beyonce’s music video in the year, many celebs and royals have seen championing the colour in recent months. This eye-catching choice is stemming the desire ‘to be bold and unique’ of generation Z – those born in the late nineties and early 2000s. Yellow in Gen Z avatar is the ultimate feel-good factor and is also considered as an auspicious shade for a wedding and holy occasions. This bold, outgoing and spontaneous hue compliments the effortless style of every millennial. You can wear it pretty much round the year and pair it with almost every other shade in the dark and light palette. Most importantly, it can be treated as the basic colour and the whole look can be planned around it or can be used in accessories to add energy to any plain look. With spring 2019 upon us, incorporation of bright colours like Gen Z Yellow into your wardrobe makes perfect sense.”

The best part about this shade is that you have different hues of Gen Z yellow, from the not so bright mustard, pastel to bright neon to choose from. Designer Wani mentions, “Gen-Z yellow started appearing in 2017 with a bit of splash in the tees, prints, and accessories. While the year 2018 saw this colour everywhere -- from hair colour to accessories to clothing. From Priyanka Chopra wearing an all lime yellow top and skirt to Dia Mirza giving it a traditional look with a mustard kurta paired with brocade pants – stars in Hollywood and Bollywood were seen embracing this colour. If you are a person with a subtle taste, you can add this colour to your accessories like earrings, sunglasses, shoes, and bags. The younger age group could experiment with the neon and brighter version of Gen-Z yellow and pair one yellow item with a neutral shade. Pastels and mustard go very well with Indian skin tone, so style it well to stand out.”

With the summer weddings already lined up, Gen Z yellow might give you extra shine and cheer along the way. Designer Viji Reddy feels the Gen Z Yellow draws inspiration from the sun, sunflowers, marigolds, and butter. He says, “It is a lovely shade to wear during the summer season and has a universal appeal to men and women alike. Yellow stands for freshness, happiness, energy, and optimism and has come back in a significant way.” For Indian wear segment, saturated shades have been in vogue for some time and this is the kind of shade that has multiple layers and depth to it, explains Meghna Zutshi. The latest line incorporates bright yellow into bright saris and kurtas, and she suggests how to style it. She says, “For those who are looking to get into the trend, try starting with just accessories, or one key piece, once you’re a little more confident, try pairing it with one understated element- navy blue or grey for example, or go the other way and make a real statement with yellow and green. For the real statement makers, you could also look to go all out and do a head to toe look of the same shade, or a tonal approach. Whatever you decide to get, be ready to bring a little sunshine in your life with Gen Z Yellow.”
