Men can go to great lengths to impress women. Right from splurging money to building a six pack, men have done it all to stir a woman’s heart. A recent study, by Cornell University, suggests that men also consume more food when in the company of women in a bid to impress!

“These findings suggest that men tend to overeat to show off,” said Kevin Kniffin, lead author of the study. “Instead of a feat of strength, it’s a feat of eating.” He went onto suggest that men wanted to demonstrate that “they possessed extraordinary skills, advantages, and surplus energy in degrees that are superior to other men.”

It also seems a paradoxical tactic as being overweight is generally considered unattractive. But the study suggest it’s also a way of showing their strength and establishing a subliminal dominance.

So, what are the most common weapons in a man’s arsenal when it comes to making an impression on the fairer sex

Men traditionally have impressed women by being in-charge, be it as a hunter-gatherer, protector and to some extent even in today’s world, as a bread winner. In the Indian context of arranged marriages, the most pertinent question from the girl’s side is often the salary of the groom and his ability to provide for the bride.

Putting marriage aside and focusing on the dating game opens up a whole new repertoire of moves including playing the cool guy, being funny and good old chivalry.

“I don’t know about eating but I think women take interest in an intelligent, funny man. Women love to be with a man who cracks them up. Any witty man who can hold his own in a conversation about something that interests the lady is his biggest weapon,” says Tara, an accountant from Chennai.

The line of work a man is in, tells a lot about his character and often is one of the biggest conversation starters between two people of the opposite sex. For example, a woman of today is more likely to be interested in man who is a risk taker as opposed to someone in a boring, routine job. In a world where young men and women are looking for new experiences, meeting people from different backgrounds appeals more to them.

Sijo J., an IT professional from Chennai, says rippling muscles and six packs don’t impress women anymore but believes the meterosexual look is a sure shot winner, “Women love men who can take care of themselves. Rippling muscles is not in vogue anymore. A man who looks fit, grooms himself and has a sensible fashion sense is bound to be a winner.”

Actor Priyamani believes nothing appeals more to women than a caring gentlemen and rates chivalry as one of the best ways to woo a woman, “I’m a very filmy person and I admire a man who can take a woman out to a romantic dinner, buy her flowers, wait her on and stuff like that. I find that cute and romantic,” she says.
