The Supreme Court’s recent statement on deciding the fate of the 5,000-year-old bull-taming festival of Tamil Nadu, Jallikattu, is a progressive one. The Supreme Court rightly stated that tradition or emotion has no role in deciding whether this practice will be continued and that the decision will be made on legal merit. Jallikattu has not only resulted in many human deaths over the years but is also injurious, and sometimes fatal, to the bulls. Traditions like Jallikattu are outdated. There is no space for such violent sports in our society today.
