Retire Gracefully

The poor batting by Team India’s senior players like Sachin Tendulkar, V.V.S. Laxman and Rahul Dravid, leading to a 4-0 defeat against Australia, is a reminder that it is time they retired gracefully. They should not wait for the BCCI to take harsh decisions. In sports what you deliver today counts and not your record. The senior players should realise that it is time to quit and give youngsters a chance to play.

Why block tweets
the claim of Twitter, the microblogging website, that it has devised technology that can selectively censor or block “tweets” on a country-by-country basis is bizarre. Twitter is a global platform for expressing oneself. Then how can Twitter define what is freedom of expression for each country? Twitter is one of the few mediums for the common man to express his/her views publicly and there should be no censorship.

Creative thinking?
Elections can sure fire the imagination of our political leaders. With the stage set for the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has decided to build a “Disneyland-type” theme park in Mathura and Vrindavan; only Lord Krishna will replace Mickey Mouse. The BJP manifesto calls these cities the country’s “adhyatmik Disneyland”. Paintings and sculptures will depict Lord Krishna’s childhood and miracles, and if this is not enough, temple staff and devotees will move around dressed as Krishna, his elder brother Balram and his cowherd friends — a creative way to consolidate its Hindu votebank.

Paes: an inspiration
Kudos to Leander Paes and his Czech partner Radek Stepanek for pulling off a stunning win against top seeded Americans Bob and Mike Bryan to clinch Australian Open Men’s Doubles title. Paes must be lauded for winning a Grand Slam title at the age of 38. He is an inspiration for budding players.
