The staff at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, have shown how often it is the medical community that undermines society’s bid to prevent the harassment of HIV-positive patients. One such patient at this college was not only ill-treated and segregated but also made to clean up her medical waste after her stitches from a caesarian delivery were cut three days after the operation. If hospitals display such unscientific bias, the entire campaign to sensitise people about HIV, telling them that it is not communicated merely by touching the infected person, will come to naught.
