Kumble on top

In announcing Anil Kumble’s name as India’s next head coach, the BCCI seems to have chosen well. The former captain and off-spinner is the third-highest wicket-taker in the world, with 619 wickets in Tests and 271 in ODIs. He is also remembered for taking 10 wickets in a Test innings at the Ferozeshah Kotla. That Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, V.V.S. Laxman were part of the selection committee may also have tilted the odds in Kumble’s favour. But he makes up for the lack of coaching experience with his heavy professional and administrative footprint.
