A fierce spirit

It is heartening to read that cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s cancer is fully curable and unlikely to cause any harm to his career. He did the country proud on a number of occasions, including his Man of the Series performance in the 2011 World Cup. Yuvraj is not only a good middle order batsman but also a great fielder. He is down but certainly not out. In keeping with his on-field fighting spirit, he will surely come up triumphant in his fight against cancer and make a comeback to the team soon.

High-handed BCCI
The BCCI has turned down Sahara India’s request to allow Yuvraj Singh’s price, $1.8 million, to be added to the Pune Warriors auction purse. According to IPL rules, teams are allowed to buy only unsold players from the balance of the auction money from the previous season. Since Yuvraj will be out of action this IPL because of cancer, Sahara’s plea was legitimate. Instead of viewing sport as a court battle, the BCCI should have amended some of the rules and averted a spat with Sahara India. This shows the increasing arrogance of the BCCI, which did not respect its 11-year-long tie with Sahara.

More trouble for UID
The food and public distribution ministry’s rejection of the recommendations made by the Nandan Nilekani’s UID team, which wanted to effect complete computerisation of the public distribution system (PDS) to check pilferage, is shocking. The ministry instead has come up with the idea of establishing a PDS common services platform, which will cost the exchequer several crores of rupees but will end up a casualty of rampant corruption in our bureaucracy. Our bureaucrats are not as tech-savvy as our times demand and are, therefore, resisting Mr Nilekani’s recommendations.

As a self-confessed hardliner, I must admit that being a part of the team engaged in Indo-Pak Track 2 dialogue has been very interesting.
