A fascinating story

I am the grandson of Alexander Campbell and I would like to thank Ashok Malik for writing about Alexander Campbell’s book The Heart of India in his article The banned critics of faltering India (Jan. 29). It is a fascinating story to me as I had no idea that my grandfather had written any books, let alone one that was banned in India. I haven’t read the book myself but I have found a digital copy on the Internet and will be reading it.
It is nice to see that his legacy is not entirely forgotten. He was a reporter for Time-Life for many years, in South Africa, India, Japan, and for his final years in Washington D.C. before passing away in 1977. I met him once, but I was very young at that time and I don’t remember much.

CIC’s brave action

Those who have dealt with the Central Information Commission (CIC) know that the procedure takes a long time. So it is nice to learn from Dilip Cherian (CIC cleans up, Jan. 29) that the CIC has itself taken steps to deal with the mounting pendency before it. Listing the cases on its website is certainly one of the ways to keep petitioners informed. Of course, faster disposal of cases is another matter. The CIC needs to look at this as well.

Unselfish dhoni

M.S. Dhoni’s offer to quit Test captaincy for a better replacement is a mature reaction from a skipper facing criticism for his unimpressive captaincy and performances in Test cricket. India has lost seven consecutive overseas Test matches under his captaincy. Dhoni has shown that he strives only for the betterment of the team and has no intention of clinging on to the captaincy.

As a self-confessed hardliner, I must admit that being a part of the team engaged in Indo-Pak Track 2 dialogue has been very interesting.
