Sparking a major controversy, authorities of the prestigious Scottish Church College issued a new dress code for its students which prevents girls from wearing skirts above the knee and boys round-neck T-shirts. The students were surprised by this diktat after a notice in this regard was put up on Saturday on the college notice board. Through the notice the authorities asked the students to “come to college in simple and unostentatious dress suitable for an academic environment”.

For girls, the dress code includes a ban on any kind of caption writings on shirts, T-shirts and tops. Only full-length trousers and skirts well below knee length and without slits will be allowed, salwar kameez and saris must be worn properly. For boys, the dress code puts a ban on any kind of earrings or facial studs and they will not be allowed to wear round-neck T-shirts.

The college authorities also made it clear that those who fail to “comply with the dress code might invite disciplinary action”.

The education fraternity on Sunday strongly criticised the decision of the college authorities to issue a dress code to its students and claimed it was an infringement on human rights.
