The state Congress on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict on land acquisition by Tata Motors at Singur and said it was a victory of the farmers.

“We welcome the verdict on land acquisition in Singur by the Supreme Court. I was personally with the Trinamul Congress during the anti-land acquisition movement. With today’s verdict, I feel that the farmers of Singur have got justice. It is a victory of their relentless struggle,” said Leader of Opposition and Congress Legislature Party Abdul Mannan.

“We hope that the land will be returned to the farmers within 12 weeks as directed by the Supreme Court. We also hope that the land will be returned to them in its original condition so that the farmers will be able to grow crops,” he added.

State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury said that the Congress had participated in the Singur anti-land acquisition movement and was of the view that it was the Singur movement which later helped Ms Mamata Banerjee bec-ome the chief minister of Bengal.

“I, along with former central minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, had participated in the Singur anti-land acquisition movement. The party had supported the struggle of the farmers. Today, we are happy with the verdict,” Mr Chowdhury said.
