A man who had protested against some drunkards, who were indulging in nuisance in front of his residence at Panchla in Howrah, was killed after being stabbed with a knife, while in another incident a cop who had protested against dumping of garbage in front of his residence allegedly died after he was beaten up by his neighbours at Balurghat. In both the cases, the police has alrea-dy arrested the accused persons. According to sources, Sheikh Israel, a resident of Howrah Panc-hla, protested against so-me drunkards who were shouting in front of his Sahapara residence at around 11 pm on Saturday.

“Israel, who was an embroidery worker, came out and requested them not to do so as his children were asleep. One of them, Sheikh Rafiq, who happens to be his relative hurled abuses and said that they would not go from there. Soon a heated exchange of words ensued. Suddenly, Rafiq took out a knife from his pocket and stabbed him,” a police officer said.

He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The police reached the spot and arrested the accused immediately.

In the incident at Balurghat, home guard Bhabesh Das had protested against dumping of garbage in front of his residence by his next-door neighbour on Saturday night. He picked a quarrel with the neighbour Prankishore Das and his two sons Raja and Paran.

Amidst the heated exchange, the three allegedly assaulted Bhabesh. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The Balurghat police arrested Prankishore and his two sons on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s family.

“We have slapped a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the three. The body of the deceased has been sent for post mortem to ascertain the real cause of death,” a top police official in the district said.

The three accused were produced at the Balurghat court on Sunday and were remanded in 14 days judicial custody.
