A Pakistani university has forbidden its students from sitting “as a couple” in the varsity premises in view of the “cultural and religious bindings and complaints by the parents”.

“In view of our cultural and religious bindings and complaints by the parents, inappropriate interaction between male and female students is herby strictly prohibited within the University premises,” a notice by the Lahore campus of University of Sargodha said.

“Students are not allowed to sit anywhere in the University premises as a couple. However, they may sit in groups of 3 or more,” the notice read. Moreover, the varsity also has a strict dress code “for ensuring that the students are dressed in a sophisticated manner.”

“The dress restriction is not to impose any rigidity or regimentation, but it is in accordance with the spirit of discipline which is the cardinal aspect of life style at UOSL campus,” according to disciplinary rules and regulations mentioned on the varsity’s website.

Male students are allowed to wear shirts, T-shirts, formal pants, jeans, shoes and joggers. It said shalwar kameez may be worn on Friday or by special permission.

Female students are asked to wear shalwar kameez with scarf/dupata, pants/trousers with long shirts, modest make-up and jewellery.

A note posted on the website for female students read that sleeveless, offensive or shirts carrying obscene remarks, patchy, tattered, baggy and shabby looking jeans and chappals are not allowed.

“Students violating dress code can be checked by any proctor within University bounds; she can be fined and will not be allowed to attend classes,” it added.
