Soldiers assault policemen after arrest of their colleague

A group of soldiers assaulted policemen who arrested one of their colleagues and then forcibly took him away from a police station in this eastern Pakistani city, officials said on Thursday.

The soldiers and policemen had a faceoff last evening after an army personnel was arrested on charges of forcibly marrying a girl.

A group of soldiers went to Misrishah police station, where their colleague was detained, and thrashed the policemen who had arrested him.

"The soldiers thrashed staff in the police station, snatched two rifles and a wireless set and kidnapped Sub-Inspector Muhammad Javed who had arrested the army personnel," a police officer told journalists.

Army officials contended that only two army personnel had ‘secured the release’ of the soldier because he was arrested ‘illegally’.

Police have registered a case against 50 unidentified personnel of the Pakistan Army for various offences under the Pakistan Penal Code.

Despite the intervention of senior police officers, the kidnapped sub-inspector is yet to be recovered from the army's custody, officials said.
