Pakistan had placed Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) on a watch-list in 2003 for monitoring purposes but did not take any further action against it after that, the Supreme Court was told on Monday.

The document submitted in the top court showed that the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba was banned in 2002. It said the government has so far banned 212 organisations. JuD and Lashkr-e-Tayyaba are accused by India of being behind the Mumbai attacks. Pakistan Entities such as the Afghan Export Bank and Ariana Afghan Airlines are also included in the list by the federal government,

The top court was told that the government has not outlawed any militant group following the deadly Taliban rampage at Peshawar’s Army Public School that left more than 150 people —mostly schoolchildren — dead in December.

Pakistan banned the Haqqani Network in 2014, and other organisations accused of sectarian violence such as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (in 2001), Jaish-e-Mohammed (in 2002) and Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (2002). Other banned groups include, Sipah-e-Mohammed Pakistan, Tehrik-e-Jaferia Pakistan, Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi, Al Qaeda, Tehrik-e-Islami, Millat-e-Islamia, Khuddamul Islam, Islami Tehrik Pakistan, Jamiatul Ansar, Jamiatul Furqan, Hizbut Tahrir, Khairun Naas International Trust, Baloch Liberation Army, Islamic Students Movement of Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Islam, Ansarul Islam, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat.

Pakistan Attorney-General Salman Aslam Butt said that 212 national and transnational groups have been proscribed by the Pakistani government.
