Donald Trump on Tuesday attacked Ahmad Khan Ramani’s right to a lawyer and medical treatment, saying that he was America’s enemy who deserved “very harsh punishment”, but would, instead, receive quality medical care and legal representation.

Speaking at a packed Florida rally as his supporters shouted “Hang him!”, the Republican presidential candidate said: “We must have speedy, but fair trials. We must deliver a just and very harsh punishment to these people. These are enemies, these are combatants and we have to be tough, we have to be strong.”

“The Congress,” the Republican presidential nominee said, “should pass measures to ensure that foreign enemy combatants are treated as such.”

Thanking the police for arresting the 28-year-old naturalised American citizen of Afghan descent who’s charged with planting bombs in New York and New Jersey that injured 29 people, Mr Trump said, “Today, we have caught this evil thug who planted the bombs. Thank you, law enforcement. Thank you, police.”

“But the bad part is now we will give him amazing hospitalisation,” the Republican presidential hopeful said to the sound of booing from the audience.

“He will be taken care of by some of the best doctors in the world. He will be given a fully modern and updated hospital room. And he’ll probably even have room service, knowing the way our country is. And on top of all of that he will be represented by an outstanding lawyer,” Mr Trump added.

“His case will go through the various court systems for years, and in the end, people will forget and his punishment will not be what it once would have been. What a sad situation,” he rued.

The US, Mr Trump said, must use whatever lawful methods are available to obtain information from the apprehended suspect to get information before it is no longer timely.

Mr Rahami will be questioned in connection with the explosion that occurred on Sunday in Chelsea district of Manhattan, New York.
