A car bomb struck the entrance of a Turkish police station on Sunday in the southern city of Gaziantep, killing two police officers and wounding 22 other people, according to media reports.

Four civilians were among those injured in the explosion, according to governor Ali Yerlikaya of Gaziantep province, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. The blast shattered the windows of nearby buildings.

The police station is close to offices for the governor and mayor. Gaziantep is also home to the offices of international aid organisations focused on the conflict in neighbouring Syria.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Speaking in Ankara, the Turkish capital, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu expressed his condolences and wished a speedy recovery to those wounded in “the heinous terrorist attack.”

Television pictures showed chaotic scenes outside the imposing police headquarters in Gaziantep as ambulances rushed to help wounded lying on the ground.

The latest attack in the heart of one of the country’s main urban centres is likely to further raise ala-rm about security in Turk-ey, which has seen tourism fall sharply since the start of 2016.
