The London police says it has made 454 arrests during the two-day Notting Hill Carnival as stabbings and drug offenses mar the Caribbean-inspired street party.

The Metropolitan police reported on Tuesday that a 14-year-old boy was among those facing charges for a string of knife attacks starting on Sunday.

Three teenagers boys and and a 20-year-old man were among five people who were stabbed.

Some 90 arrests involved possession of knives or other weapons, while 169 drug offenses were registered.

Other offences included public order, sexual offences, grievous bodily harm and actual body harm.

The annual west London celebration of reggae music, steel drums and dancers evokes the neighborhood's West Indies heritage.

The carnival traces its roots back to Caribbean music festivals in the 1950s after the first surge in arrivals from former British colonies after World War II.

The carnival properly started in 1966 when local resident Rhaune Laslett organised a "jump up" for children in Notting Hill, which at the time was considered a slum, but is now one of the most expensive areas in London.
