Mystery surrounding teenaged student Aabesh Dasgupta’s death remained unresolved even as the Kolkata police set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by joint commissioner (crime) Vishal Garg. The mother of the deceased, Rimjhim Dasgupta, visited city police headquarters at Lalbazar and met police commissioner Rajiv Kumar, who assured her of an impartial and speedy inquiry. Ms Dasgupta’s family insisted that Abesh was murdered while the police sources said that circumstancial evidence, statements of eye witnesses and primary post-mortem opinion suggested that his death might have been accidental.

A high-level police team led by DC DD II Neeloo Sherpa Chakraborty visited the place of crime along with a forensic team in the evening. On Sunday nigh, a team of autopsy experts had also visited the place to ascertain what led to the teen’s death. Aabesh had suffered a laceration on the left armpit apparently caused by a broken bottle of liquor. There were 17 youth, including Aabesh, in the party. Those questioned have given identical statements suggesting that Abesh had accidentally fallen down and injured himself.

After returning from Lalbazar, Ms Dasgupta told the media that the police commissioner had asked her to have faith in the investigation. “But I am afraid the time is fast running out,” he said.
