Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday held a series of closed-door meetings with local players here in an endeavour to end two weeks of unrest in the Kashmir Valley that has claimed the lives of about 50 protesters, mostly in firing by the security forces. A couple of thousand civilians and a large number of security personnel have been injured.

Mr Singh held “extensive discussions” on the prevailing situation with governor N.N. Vohra at Raj Bhavan here Saturday evening. About half an hour later they were joined by chief minister Mehbooba Mufti. “The discussions would continue over the dinner,” an official said.

The CM, whose repeated appeals for an end to the protests and for peace have failed to impress people, may also hold a separate one-on-one meeting with Mr Singh.
