The BJP on Sunday asked Uttar Pradesh CM Akhil-esh Yadav to either prove the charge levelled by his Cabinet colleague Azam Khan that the “Prime Minister met Dawood” or apologise for this “baseless remark”.

The BJP also hit out at Mr Khan over the Muzaffarnagar riots, accusing him of “touching a new low in his practice of votebank politics”. The BJP said his remarks were a “desperate attempt to hide the failures of the Akhilesh government and divide people”.

“Azam Khan should either prove his charges or Akhilesh Yadav should apologise for levelling such malicious and baseless charges against the PM,” BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said. He added: “The Mufazzar-nagar riots are Azam Khan’s creation.”

He said it was under Mr Khan’s pressure that the UP police had failed to act against the Muzaffarnagar molesters.

“This inaction sowed the seeds of the riots, which took a communal colour. All probes highlighted Azam Khan’s role in Muzaffarnagar... His latest remarks (are) another attempt to divide society for appeasement and votebank politics, and to cover up for Akhilesh’s governance failures in Uttar Pradesh,” the BJP national secretary said.
