New Delhi: The Centre has clarified that it has not intention of deferring the Assembly pollss in Nagaland and that the same will be held on schedule even as some Naga outfits have been demanding that elections be delayed in a bid to help find a solution to the insurgency problem in the state.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh also info-rmed Nagaland chief minister T.R. Zeliang about the Centre’s intent during a meeting on Wednesday. In a tweet on Thursday, the home minister’s office also clarified that Mr Singh told the Nagaland CM that conducting elections was EC’s prerogative and these would be held on schedule.

In his meeting with the home minister, the CM also gave some suggestions on dealing with the complex Naga problem. Mr Singh also informed Mr Zeliang that talks be-tween Centre’s interloc-utors and Naga outfits will, however, continue.

Even Naga Hoho, an apex body of Naga tribal groups, had on Tuesday written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking postponement of the Assembly polls, saying that it was important to resolve the insurgency problem first.
