The NIA has so far not got any clinching evidence against senior Punjab police officer Salwinder Singh, who was being probed by the agency in connection with the Pathankot terror strike. Sources said the lie-detector and other psychological tests found nothing adverse against him on his role in the terror siege. While the NIA has officially denied giving him a clean chit yet, sources said it may be difficult for the agency to establish any case against him and he may be let off after his statements are recorded and the agency’s probe on his role is complete. Mr Singh, an SP-rank officer, had claimed that he was abducted by the group of terrorists who attacked the Pathankot Indian Air Force Base. He was under NIA scanner following suspicion that he was part of the drug racket being run in the bordering districts of Pathankot and Gurdaspur, the sources said.

The searches at various places including his office, residence and native place in Amritsar did not result in the recovery of incriminating documents, NIA officials said. Mr Singh may be made a witness in the case if he comes out clean.

The NIA has been questioning Mr Singh over the last fortnight to ascertain the sequence of events that took place after he was kidnapped on the night of December 31 and January 1 by terrorists of Pakistan-based JeM. The kidnappers released Mr Singh and the cook but slit the throat of jeweller Rajesh Verma.
