Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati has demanded the dismissal of Assam governor P.B. Acharya for his controversial statement.

Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati has demanded the dismissal of Assam governor P.B. Acharya for his controversial statement. Criticising the Assam governor’s statement “Hindustan is for Hindus”, Ms Mayawati said that, “It is most unbecoming for a person sitting on such a high post to issue a statement which is against the spirit of the Constitution. It is unfortunate that the Central government has given such high post to people associated with the RSS and having such distorted mentality.”

Ms Mayawati asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action in this case and added that this was necessary to prove that there is no difference in what he preaches and follows.

“The Prime Minister should prove that what he is claiming during his foreign trips is not aimed just at gaining cheap publicity and that in this over one year period (of being Prime Minister) he is more serious now. He should take action against the Assam governor and prove that more than the RSS’ orders, it is national interest which is of importance to him,” she said. The BSP president said that there was a need to seriously ponder as to how the country’s image and prestige, which is continuously facing being harmed at the global level, can be rectified.

Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Monday demanded that the Centre appoint a “permanent” governor for the state by replacing Mr Acharya, who is holding additional charge.

Accusing the governor of pursuing the communal agenda of the RSS, Mr Gogoi told reporters, “While clarifying his remark that Hindustan is for Hindus only, the governor has exposed himself more by making communal remarks against the Muslim community.”

Mr Gogoi said, “To keep the unity of the state intact and to continue the development, a person with a broad mind should be appointed as the governor of the state.”
