At least 30 people were killed on Saturday and over 40 others injured in separate lightning incidents in various parts of Orissa.

According to reports, eight people were killed in Bhadrak district, while seven perished in the natural disaster in the neighbouring Balasore district.

In Khurda district, six persons were killed in the disaster, while two each died in Kendrapara, Nayagarh and Mayurbhanj district. One each died in Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack and Puri districts.

Most of the deceased were killed while working in the paddy field.

Expressing his profound grief over the deaths, Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik asked the officials of revenue and disaster management to immediately provide ex-gratia amount to the next of kin of the deceased.

He also directed health department officials to provide free of cost treatment to all the injured persons.

Reports from Balasore said Ajay Jena and Padmalochan Jena of Angula village in Soro block of Balasore district were killed after being struck by lightning when they were working in paddy fields.

Another person, identified as Gajendra Patra of Jagannathpur village here, was killed in a similar way.

A woman of Basta area, identified as Gouri Patra, was seriously injured in the lightning strikes. She was admitted to Soro Community Health Centre (CHC) in a critical condition.

In Bhadrak, two persons of Bisalapatta village in Banta block were killed. The lightning incident took place while they were working in their field.
