The Centre on Monday held a series of meetings to contain the violence in Kashmir following the killing of Hizbul Mujahi-deen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review the situation in J&K.

NSA Ajit Doval, who was accompanying Mr Modi on an official tour of African nations, rushed back to review the situation.

Mr Doval, Union home minister Rajnath Singh, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley and senior officials from security and intelligence agencies held meetings to check the violence.

Meanwhile, the Indian high commissioner in Islamabad, Gautam Bambawale, was summoned to the foreign office where the Pakistani foreign secretary conveyed “Pakistan’s serious concerns over the recent killings of Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani and many other civilians”, statements seen here as designed to escalate matters.

New Delhi dismissed Islamabad’s attack, saying it reflected its “continued attachment” to terrorism. India also asked Pakistan to refrain from interfering in its internal affairs. Pakistan claimed excessive force was used against “innocent civilians” and termed it “deplorable”.
