Former SP leader Amar Singh revealed that Modi is planning to propose Amitabh's name to be next President of India.

In an interesting turn of events, ex-leader of Samajwadi Party Amar Singh has revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to propose Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan's name for the next President of India.

The current President of India, Pranab Mukerjee assumed office in July 2012, however, it remains unclear when he will retire from his position next year or will renew his term.

In an interview to Zee News' India24x7, Amar Singh said, “PM Narendra Modi is planning to propose Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan's name for the next President of India."

Apparently, Amar, who shares a close bond with Amitabh, introduced him to Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Amar said, "I was the one who introduced Amitabh Bachchan to Narendra Modi in connection with Paa movie. After Modi-Bachchan's meeting for Paa, Narendra Modi asked Amitabh Bachchan to become the brand ambassador of Gujarat."

When contacted, Amitabh Bachchan told DC, "I'm deeply humbled and touched by the thought. But I'm not worthy of such a distinguished post of responsibility. Besides no such offer or proposal has come my way yet."

He further added, "I've constantly maintained politics is not my cup of tea. That's unlikely to change. There are many other ways of making oneself useful to the country and the society besides politics."

Interestingly, earlier this month, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shatrughan Sinha addressed the same point. He had said, “It will be a matter of pride if Amitabh Bachchan, a cultural icon, is made President of the country. He has achieved many milestones in cultural and social fields and if he becomes president, it will fetch a good name for the country."

The actor had tried his hand at politics, when he contested the Lok Sabha election from Allahabad in 1984 on a congress ticket and won, resigned after three years as an MP.
