A dalit police officer died of heart attack after he was demoted under the reversal of promotion policy being implemented by the Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh.

Arakshan Bachao Sangharsh Samiti convenor Avadesh Varma told reporters on Monday that Ram Singh Khair was posted as a sub-inspector in the transport department of the 8th battalion of PAC in Bareilly. Khair, who had been promoted under the Mayawati government’s reservation in promotion policy, was demoted to the post of driver. The sub-inspector, apparently, could not withstand the reversal of fortunes and suffered a heart attack and died two days ago. Mr Varma said that in the police department alone, over 2,000 dalit employees have been demoted following the Akhilesh Yadav government’s decision to undo the Mayawati government’s policy on the orders of the top court.

The ABSS held a condolence meeting for Khair on Monday and reiterated their commitment to further intensify their fight for a central legislation in support of reservation in promotion. Around 8 lakh state government employees are supporting the ABSS agitation.
