Bhubaneswar: An undergraduate girl student of the DAV School of Business Management (DSBM) here allegedly committed suicide in the college hostel late on Monday night.

The deceased, identified as Tanaya Banerjee from Talcher in Odisha’s Angul district, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of the hostel.

The family members of the deceased alleged that she was being tortured by her seniors and juniors on false charges of theft for which she was under mental pressure and took the extreme step.

As per the complaint lodged with the local police, the deceased had called her mother on Monday night and cried over phone while speaking about the torture inflicted upon her by a few seniors.

On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and recovered a suicide note from the hostel room. The cops also sent the dead body to the Capital Hospital for post-mortem.

On the other hand, an internal committee has been formed by the school to probe into the matter.

When asked, the school authorities said the reason behind her death was unknown. They clarified though that there was no exam pressure on the student.

The hostel warden said, “There was no issue till 11 pm. I don’t know what happened after that. But she had never complained of any physical or mental torture.”
