Assam tribal king held for raping woman
The king of Karbi people, Harsing Ronghang, has been accused of trespassing and raping a woman in Hamren area.
Guwahati: The Assam police on Tuesday arrested a 53-year-old tribal king on the charges of raping a 33-year-old mother of four in Karbi Anglong district.

The in-charge of Hamren police station in West Karbi Anglong district said, “Ronghang was summoned to the police station on Tuesday and later arrested. We are waiting for the report of the medical examination of the victim.”
The victim has accused that Ronghang visited her house on Wednesday night and allegedly raped her. “He left early next morning threatening the woman not to disclose the incident. After a couple of days, she told her neighbours and the news spread in the area,” police said.
The residents and elders of the area on Monday called a meeting of the community, in which Ronghang confessed his crime. Thereafter, the women lodged an FIR.
The tribal king manages his affairs from a kingdom — Ronghang Rongbong, 16 km from Hamren, the district headquarters.
The king does not wield any political power, but has his influence and authority over the socio-cultural life of the Karbi people. He is assisted by 30 members of his council along with three subordinate kings. People go to him seeking his mediation whenever there are any dispute.
Karbi Anglong is an autonomous district council, which looks after the administration of the hill districts.
