Youth held for operating fake FB accounts of IPS officers

Guwahati: Assam police on Sunday arrested a youth who is alleged to have been operating fake Facebook account of 17 police officers, including those of the Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia and Guwahati police commissioner Hiren Nath.

The crime branch of the city police, acting on specific tip off the cyber-crime cell, arrested 30-year-old Suleiman Ibrahim Ali from the city on Saturday evening.

Police said that the accused has confessed to have been operating fake Facebook account of 17 IPS officers.

Informing that Ali had opened fake Facebook accounts of some police officers from outside the state also, police said, “He claimed to have opened all these fake accounts for fun. He also claimed that he added all these fake Facebook accounts of IPS officers to his profile just to show off his proximity with police officers to his friends.”

Ali, son of a retired superintendent engineer of the state government, is unemployed.  Police in in its investigation has found that apart from the 17 fake accounts of police officers, he had six Facebook profiles under his name.

Police have recovered 47 cellphones and 15 SIM cards from Ali. The police had started investigation into the case in June when they discovered the fake Facebook profile of the DGP.
