The charred body of Sweta Agarwal (20) was recovered from the bathroom of the rented house of Govind (21) on December 4 last.
Guwahati: The college girl, whose charred body was recovered by the police in Guwahati two days ago, was murdered by her boyfriend, the police claimed on Wednesday.
City police commissioner Hiren Nath said that the girl’s boyfriend — Govind Singhal — who, along with his mother and sister is in custody, has confessed to the crime. The charred body of Sweta Agarwal (20) was recovered from the bathroom of the rented house of Govind (21) on December 4 last.
While referring confession of the accused student, Mr Nath said that the two, who were romantically involved, had got into an argument and in a fit of rage, Govind had pushed Sweta towards the wall, which proved fatal for her.
The two were alone in the house at that time, but Govind’s mother and sister were present when he tried to burn her body. Before setting her body on fire, Govind tried to carry it on his motorcycle to throw it into a stream, but failed to do so as there were people around. Then he brought back the body and burnt it with kerosene inside the lavatory, from where the police later recovered the charred body.
Citing Govind’s confession, the police commissioner said his mother and sister were not at home when Shweta was murdered but accompanied him in setting the body afire. He said the police were trying to corroborate the confession of all three to join the dots.
The commissioner said that Govind and Shweta were having an affair since May 2016 and the girl used to visit his place though her family was not aware of this. Govind confessed that Shweta had been pressing him to meet her family for marriage as Govind’s family was planning to soon shift to Siliguri, but Govind was unrelenting, that led to the altercation.
The police team is also trying to recover the mobile phone and other belongings of Shweta, which Govind claimed to have thrown into the nearby stream.
The commissioner said the police were investigating and the post-mortem report would throw more light on the case. He said that Shweta was a brilliant student and she, along with Govind, was also pursuing CA from a private firm besides doing B Com from KC Das Commerce College in the city.
Police had launched a search to trace Shweta on Monday after her family lodged a complaint that she had gone missing since 2 pm while on her way back from college and repeated calls on her mobile phone had gone unanswered. Police however said that sister of the accused who came back to home after the incident called police.
Shweta’s father, Om Prakash Agarwal, a tax consultant who lives at Manipuri Basti area of the city, alleged that his daughter was raped and murdered by Govind. He, however, denied any knowledge of their affair, acknowledging that both worked together in a CA firm in the city. Govind’s father, RS Shinghal, who is a businessman, lives in Silliguri. Govind was living with his mother and sister in a rented house in Shantipur area of the city where incident took place.
