: A woman in a Madhya Pradesh village alleged that the police forced her and her family members to drink each other’s urine to extract confession from them of their involvement in a murder of her daughter-in-law.

The 40-year-old woman, resident of Singarchauri village in Sehore district, narrated in an affidavit the alleged inhuman torture she and her family members, who included her husband, son and four other minor children, were allegedly subjected to at the Ashta police station, where they were reportedly detained for 15 days for interrogation in connection with missing of her daughter-in-law.

The woman lodged a complaint with chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, state director general of police (DGP) R.K.Shukla, state human rights commission, state women commission, local DIG and superintendent of police, demanding action against the cops allegedly involved in their custodial torture.

“I lodged the complaint on September 28,” the woman, who also alleged intimidation by the local police not to pursue the matter, said while requesting concealment of her identity to protect her family’s reputation in her society. Incidentally, her daughter-in-law was traced in Bhopal on September 27 by her parents. According to the affidavit, the woman’s son married to a girl of Pattan village in the district three years ago. Her daughter-in-law disappeared from her house a year ago.

“We have begun a probe. The woman had earlier lodged similar complaints, but her claims were found to be untrue,” local sub-divisional officer of police G.P. Agrawal said.

The family lodged a missing complaint at the Siddiganj police station in the district. However, her daughter-in-law’s brother filed a habeas corpus in the MP high court, which directed the police to search for the missing woman. She and her family members were later allegedly detained by the Ashta police for interrogation.
