Foolproof security is being made for a two-day Brics summit in Goa following inputs that Pakistan-based terror groups could target the October 15-16 event to be attended by the heads of Brazil, Russia, Indian, China and South Africa.
The Centre will deploy special commando units from para-military forces, including the elite National Security Guards, for the conference to be attended by about 900 delegates. Dog squads which specialise in anti-sabotage checks have been sent to Goa.
“We are confident to ensure foolproof security to the summit. Senior officials are monitoring the arrangements,” a senior home ministry official said.
Intelligence sources said that after India’s surgical strikes against terrorists across the LoC last month, there was a strong possibility that Pakistan-based terror groups would carry out a “spectacular strike” at a high-profile event. The presence of international delegates at the BRICS summit makes it a potential target.
In the wake of a high security alert across the country, the home ministry issued on Monday an advisory to the states to deploy additional security at crowded places.
