Arrested underworld don Chhota Rajan will be flown to Mumbai straight from Bali as the Indian team in Bali has pressed for his deportation which may happen as early as Tuesday or Wednesday. If deported, Rajan is likely to travel in a commercial flight, with the Maharashtra police and CBI officials and accompanying security, back to Mumbai where several cases are awaiting him for trial, including the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA).

The only hitch in his quick return to India may come if Rajan challenges the Indian government’s request for deportation in the Indonesian court citing “threat to his life”, top sources disclosed. However, the Indian agencies are hoping that Rajan may not go to court with this plea as he had earlier expressed keenness to return to India.

Rajan, who was arrested in Indonesia on October 25, is expected to be produced before a court on Tuesday where the Indonesian police will submit details of the cases for which he is wanted in India. The Indian team, consisting of officials of the CBI, Maharashtra police and Delhi police, has already been working with their Indonesian counterparts to ensure Rajan’s custody is granted to them as early as possible.

“If Rajan’s lawyer in Indonesia does not oppose his deportation to India, then he will be brought to Mumbai immediately wh-ere there are several cases against him,” sources said. The Indian team, which arrived in Bali on Sunday is learnt to have questioned Rajan on Monday in the presence of Indonesian police at the detention centre where he has been lodged for the last ten days.

The Mumbai police has registered 75 cases against Rajan, including 20 of murder, four cases under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, one under Prevention of Terrorism Act and over 20 cases under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. The Delhi police has got six cases registered against him. Once in Mumbai, Rajan is expected to be tried under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) with some of the cases being slapped against him invoking the law.
