Mutilated carcass of a bull was found in a cow shelter near Bhatta Kufar in Chamiyana Panchayat, about 15 kms from here on Sunday morning, triggering tension in the area, the police said.

The bull was spotted lying in a pool of blood with its tail chopped off and serious wounds on the abdomen in the morning, they said.

The pradhan of the gram panchayat said the incident occurred in the night and came to light when a boy in the nearby parking lot spotted the animal.

A case has been registered against unknown people under Section 11 of Animal Protection Act and Section 429 of IPC, DSP Bhajan Negi said. The carcass was sent for post-mortem and the report is awaited, the police said.

The VHP accused the administration of not taking proper steps to check smuggling of cows and bulls and said it was unfortunate that the sordid incident took place in the constituency of the chief minister. VHP state organising secretary Manoj Kumar, local councillor Shelendra Chauhan, Bajrang Dal convenor Sanjay Kumar and district BJP president Ajay Shyam have demanded arrest of the culprits within 24 hours.
