BJP to CBI: Probe PM ‘involvement’

Hardening its stand against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the 2G spectrum scam, the main Opposition BJP on Saturday demanded that the CBI probe Dr Singh’s “involvement” in the case. The party, which has been demanding home minister P. Chidambaram’s resignation on the 2G spectrum

issue, on Saturday said his “place is in the same cell in Tihar jail in which former communications minister A. Raja has been lodged”. The party said the Supreme Court should direct the CBI to probe against PM and the then finance minister Chidambaram.
The BJP also released a booklet Saturday on correspondences between A. Raja and the PM on the 2G issue. The booklet also contains letter written by former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran to Dr Singh. The party reiterated that the finance ministry note to the PMO on the 2G issue shows that Mr Chidambaram “completely abandoned” the initial stand taken by the finance ministry on the 2G spectrum issue and favoured the DoT stand.
“The Prime Minister is totally complicit in this case. His (PM) silence doesn’t mean he knew nothing, it means he kept mum even when Raja kept him in the loop of every single violation and deviation from rules,” said senior BJP leader and joint parliamentary committee (JPC) member Yashwant Sinha. He added: “If today I have any admiration for A. Raja it is for the fact that he kept the Prime Minister informed at every step. He wrote a letter to the Prime Minister whenever a new development took place.”
In Gujarat, chief minister Narendra Modi also took a dig at Manmohan Singh government saying “People’s mindset has become such that while switching on the TV sets or opening newspapers they ask who has gone to jail today or who is the next to go to jail (in 2G scam).” He, however, refrained from naming any UPA minister.
Meanwhile, Mr Sinha also felt his party should have attacked Mr Chidambaram harder than it has till now. The party demanded Mr Chidambaram should be tried based on “prima facie guilt”.
The BJP leader said PM earlier defended Raja but stopped when he was sent to jail. “When Chidambaram is sent to jail, the Prime Minister will stop defending him too. Then he will only defend himself. And when his government goes in the wake of this scam, then it will become difficult for him to defend himself,” the BJP leader said.
