Guwahati: In what may be called another feather in the cap of Assam tea plantation industry, the Manohari gold tea was sold on Tuesday at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre for Rs 39,001 per kg which is highest ever record price of any Indian tea.

The lot of orthodox tea was bought by Saurav Tea Traders in Tuesday’s auction at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre. The Managing Director of Manohari Tea Estate Mr Rajan Lohia told this newspaper, “We are delighted over this new record breaking price as we manufactured this tea based on high demand from discerning consumers and tea connoisseurs for this type of premium quality specialty tea. It has fetched price of gold and will be helpful in reviving the tea industry in the long run.” Delighted over the record breaking performance of his plantation, he pointed out that this tea is known for its variant characteristics of several health benefits, leaving a bright gold like liquor and shooting after taste and thus the record breaking price.” he explained.

Manohari Tea Estate is situated in the upper region of Assam at 390 feet above sea level. It is spread over 1800 acres land, with over 1000 acres plantation. Nearly three million pounds of black and green tea are produced annually.

The climate, soil, and genetic make-up of this native variety of tea plants give Assam teas their characteristic full-bodied liquor and hearty flavour. All of the gardens in the Assam region are virtually on the same plain with an altitude of approximately 500 feet. The quality of Manohari tea has also defied the myth and proved that not all-fine quality tea has to be grown in high elevations. It is significant that recently the Tea Board of India had revised permissible bid limit for orthodox tea leaf type from Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000. The tea producers from Assam had moved to the board asking to remove the price cap as there are producers who are producing teas which can fetch prices more than the bidding limit.

Mr Lohia who was instrumental in moving this proposal said that after the revision of the price cap, he decided to sell tea at auctions.
