Slipper hurled at Haasan amid Godse remark, 11 named in complaint
In the police complaint, eleven people have been named, including BJP workers and members of another outfit, Hanuman Sena.
Chennai: During campaigning, slippers were thrown at actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan on Wednesday evening in Madurai. The attack came three days after Haasan said “India’s first extremist was a Hindu”, referring to Nathuram Godse.
In the police complaint, eleven people have been named, including BJP workers and members of another outfit, Hanuman Sena.
They threw slippers towards the stage when Kamal Haasan was addressing the crowd. Police said slippers did not hit Kamal and fell on the crowd.
While campaigning on Sunday, he said: "I am not saying this because this is a Muslim-dominated area, but I am saying this before a statue of Gandhi. Independent India's first extremist (theeviravaadi) was a Hindu, his name is Nathuram Godse. There it starts."
A police complaint was also filed against the actor-politician on Monday in Aravakurichi over his comments.
On Wednesday, Haasan said he stood by his remarks and he had only “stated facts” in his speech. He has filed a petition for anticipatory bail in the Madras High Court and the court will hear the petition today.
Earlier in the day, Kamal Haasan’s party had issued a statement saying his comments were "taken out of context".
